Product Description

Bornite (Copper Ore) - "Peacock Ore"
Naturally Occurring (Untreated)

Mineral Specimen

Granville County, North Carolina

Each specimen is at least 1"

Individually bagged and labeled with name and mined location

Specifications: Each of these 10 pieces will have at least one side that measures 3/4" in length. For each of the 10 pieces, a rough estimate of size is 3/4” x 1/2" x 1/4”.

General Mineral Description:  Bornite is one of the primary copper ores.  It typically occurs in a massive metallic form, and has the interesting characteristic of quickly tarnishing from a reddish-orange color on fresh breaks, to a vibrant iridescent purple that flashes brilliant teal to sky blues, shortly after being exposed to air and moisture.

Specific Mineral Description:  The bornite from this location, occurs as narrow stringers in brecciated milky quartz veins, which makes for a beautiful visual combination and collector’s specimen.  Please note that the milky quartz makes up a majority of the material in this specimen, with the bornite as a less than 20% inclusion.

It is critical to note, that the bornite in this offering is as it occurs in nature, and has NOT been treated in anyway.  Why am I pointing this out?  Because much of the “bornite” (also called “Peacock Ore”) sold on the market is chemically treated to produce the brilliant iridescent coloration.

So, because the bornite in this offering is in its natural state, it makes for a much truer education and collector’s specimen.

Also of note, I took the pictures of these specimens after they tarnished to the iridescent purple.  And apparently, the iridescence makes for greater difficulty in taking pictures that adequately represent the beauty of this material.

In other words, this material is much more attractive in person than the pictures portray, a photographic problem I usually don't have.

Photography:  The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the 10 pieces of rock you will receive.  The pieces pictured are not the actual ones that you will receive, but are from the same rock stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from.  Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the rocks in both direct sunlight and shade.

Questions:  If you have any questions about our rock and mineral offerings, please know that we encourage you to contact us via the email or phone information on our "Customer Service" page.  In most cases, we reply in less than 24 hours!  Additionally, because we research, identify and collect most of the rocks and minerals ourselves, we are qualified and eager to answer your specific and complex questions regarding our rock and mineral offerings!
