Product Description

Breccia

Brecciated Rhyolite in Quartz

Teacher Class Pack - 10 Piece

Metamorphic Rock Specimens

Randolph County, North Carolina

Specifications Each of these 10 pieces will have at least one side that measures 3/4" in length, and an overall size estimate of 3/4” x 1/2" x 1/4”. The 10 specimens are packed together in a durable ziplock plastic bag, that has one label with the name of the material and the location in which it was found.

Specific Description: Generally speaking, breccia is a rock that is defined by its two major attributes.  The first and primary being its random assortment of angular or broken rock.  These angular pieces are typically of one distinct rock type.  These pieces are predominantly sharp-angled, and are usually the product of a sudden cataclismic event such as an ancient landslide, however, some breccia is clearly the product of the ongoing and gradual metamorphic processes (faulting) of planet earth.

The second attribute is what "suspends" or "glues" those angular fragments of rock together to form the overall rock type called breccia.  Please note that there are many types of breccia, that are all further defined by the particular rocks or minerals that it contains, as well as the geological process that brought it about.  For example, the type of breccia we are offering here is a brecciated rhyolite in quartz that is the end product of metamorphic processes (faulting) even though rhyolite itself is an igneous rock and quartz is a mineral.

Photography:  The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the 10 pieces of material you will receive.  The pieces pictured are not the actual ones that you will receive, but are from the same rock and mineral stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from.  Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the material in both direct sunlight and shade.

Questions:  If you have any questions about our rock and mineral offerings, please know that we encourage you to contact us via the email or phone information on our "Customer Service" page.  In most cases, we reply in less than 24 hours!  Additionally, because we research, identify and collect most of the rocks and minerals ourselves, we are qualified and eager to answer your specific and complex questions regarding our rock and mineral offerings!
