Mineral Specimen
Mexico
Specifications: Each specimen is more than 1 inch on at least one side, and will come individually bagged and labeled with name and location of occurance.
Specific Description: Calcite or calcium carbonate (CaCO3), occurs widely in its mineral form, and is also a common rock-forming mineral. Amongst all the minerals, calcite has the widest variety of crystal shapes. Calcite is fairly soft, having a hardness of 3 on the MOHS. Additionally, calcite responds well to the "acid test", in which either cold dilute hydrochloric acid or white vinegar produce carbon dioxide bubbles ("fiz") on the mineral's surface. TIP: If a positive acid test reaction does not readily occur on the surface of the calcite, attempt crumbling the calcite into powdered form and then exposing it to the acid. This is especially helpful when using the vinegar, which is weaker of the two acids.
Photography: The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the specimen you will receive. None of the pieces pictured, will be the actual one you will receive, but will be from the same rock stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from. Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the material in both direct sunlight and shade.
