Most people are unaware of North Carolina's coal deposits, which is not surprising, as coal is RARE in North Carolina.
This is bituminous coal, that is found in the Cumnock Formation which consists of various shales, siltstone, sandstone,
clay, black-band (ferruginous black shale with siderite nodules) and some diabase dikes.
This formation resides exclusively in the Deep River Basin of central North Carolina.
