Product Description

 Limonite Pseudomorphs after Pyrite

Teacher Class Pack - 15 Piece

Mineral Specimens

Clay County, North Carolina

Specifications Each of these 15 pieces will have at least one side that measures 5/16" in length.  In addition, most of these pseudomorphs are cubal in shape, although a few pieces do follow the odd shaping (non-cubal) of the original pyrite, as well as exhibit slight shape change (rounding of edges and overall smoothing of material) from the chemical trasition from pyrite to limonite. The 15 specimens are packed together in a ziplock plastic bag, that has one label with the name of the material and the location in which it was found.

Specific Description:  A pseudomorph is usually produced when a mineral (such as pyrite) with a well defined crystalline structure, is weathered and is chemically transformed into another mineral, while simultaneously retaining the majority of the previoud mineral's physical structure.  The color of these limonite pseudomorphs vary from light yellow to chocolate brown coloration

Generally speaking, l
imonite typically forms in the oxidized zones of iron-bearing deposits, when iron minerals such as pyrite decompose. Water is usually part of this process, and is retained in varying amounts by the limonite that results
.

Photography:  The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the material you will receive.  The pieces pictured are not the actual ones that you will receive, but are from the same rock and mineral stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from.  Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the material in both direct sunlight and shade.

Questions:  If you have any questions about our rock and mineral offerings, please know that we encourage you to contact us via the email or phone information on our "Customer Service" page.  In most cases, we reply in less than 24 hours!  Additionally, because we research, identify and collect most of the rocks and minerals ourselves, we are qualified and eager to answer your specific and complex questions regarding our rock and mineral offerings!
