Teacher Class Pack - 10 Piece
Mineral Specimens
Harnett County, North Carolina
Specifications: Each of these 10 pieces will have at least one side that measures 3/4" in length, and an overall size estimate of 3/4” x 1/2" x 1/4”. The 10 specimens are packed together in a durable ziplock plastic bag, that has one label with the name of the material and the location in which it was found.
Specific Description: This is an equigranular quartz-magnetite rock (iron ore) and is composed of 50-60 percent quartz and 40-50 percent magnetite. This material has the minor constituent mineral pyrite, which does not occur in every specimen. This quartz-magnetite (iron ore) is massive, heavy, has a metallic luster, is reddish-purple in coloration, fractures fairly evenly and is a 5-6 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Historical note: The iron ore from this location was mined by the Confederacy during the Civil War, and produced a considerable amount of iron for their war effort.
Photography: The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the 10 pieces of material you will receive. The pieces pictured are not the actual ones that you will receive, but are from the same rock and mineral stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from. Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the material in both direct sunlight and shade.
