Teacher Class Pack - 10 Piece
Igneous Rock Specimens
Oregon, USA
Specifications: Each of these 10 pieces will have at least one side that measures 3/4" in length, and an overall size estimate of 3/4” x 1/2" x 1/4”. The 10 specimens are packed together in a durable ziplock plastic bag, that has one label with the name of the material and the location in which it was found.
Specific Description: This obsidian is primarily black, with scattered whitish-gray patterns that resemble snowflakes.
Generally speaking, obsidian is a volcanic glass that forms when molten rock cools very rapidly on the surface of the earth. Because of this rapid solidification, crystals do not form. Obsidian is easily identified by not only its glassy appearance and texture, but also its unique conchoidal (resembles a shell) fracture. Additionally, the fracture produces very sharp edges, so handle with caution. Due to its favorable fracture characteristics, obsidian is often used by skilled artisans, who carefully chip it into pieces of jewelry, tools and weapons by the process known as "knapping".
Photography: The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the 10 pieces of material you will receive. The pieces pictured are not the actual ones that you will receive, but are from the same rock and mineral stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from. Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the material in both direct sunlight and shade.
