A very nice specimen to add to your collection!

Specific material description: This specimen is a very nice example of siderite in nodule form. This nodule was formed in the Cumnock Formation which consists of various shales, siltstone, sandstone, clay, black-band (ferruginous black shale with siderite nodules) and some diabase dikes. This formation resides exclusively in the Deep River Basin of central North Carolina.The shiny silvery sheen (iron content) of this siderite nodule is a striking element of this specimen.

General material description: Siderite is the mineral composed of iron carbonate or FeCO3. It is very common in the coal fields, where it occurs as a reddish-brown mineral in shale layers, nodules, concretions, and fossil burrows. Commonly, a siderite nodule will have a nucleus of another mineral such as pyrite, sphalerite, or chert.

This is a sedimentary rock specimen.
