Teacher Class Pack - 12 Piece
Mineral Specimens
North Carolina
Specifications: The sizing method used for this offering is as follows; if you measure the longest side on each one of these pyrite cubes, and averaged them, the overall average would equal approximately 1/2". In addition, these pyrites are MOSTLY cubal in shape, although not perfectly, as this rarely occurs in nature. In other words, some of the cubes have not completely formed to complete the edges, and the 3 main measurements (L x W x H) are not exactly the same. You will find the typical dimensions to be something similar to 6/16" x 8/16" x 9/16", which is mostly cubal, but not perfectly. Additionally, the 12 specimens are packed together in a durable ziplock plastic bag, that has one label with the name of the material and the location in which it was found.
Specific Description: Pyrite is a shiny yellow mineral, that is common, and occurs in massive form, as well the cubal crystalline form that is for sale in this offering. Pyrite is often mistaken for gold because of the shared color and shininess, and because of this, pyrite is sometimes referred to as "Fools Gold". Pyrite is somewhat brittle, a 5 - 6 on the MOHS and has a black streak, although at times, a subtle greenish shading to the black can be seen in the streak. The chemical formula for pyrite is FeS2, or iron sulfide. And because it is a sulfide, at times, it is possible to smell a sulfurous rotten egg oder.
Photography: The pictures are representative of the quality and general size of the material you will receive. The pieces pictured are not the actual ones that you will receive, but are from the same rock and mineral stock (outcrop or formation) your order will be filled from. Additionally, while taking the representative pictures, a diligent effort was made to capture the material in both direct sunlight and shade.
