Quartzite

Teacher Class Pack - 10 Piece

Metamorphic Rock Specimens

Johnston County, North Carolina

Specifications:  Each of these 10 pieces will have at least one side that measures 3/4" in length, and an overall size estimate of 3/4” x 1/2" x 1/4”. The 10 specimens are packed together in a durable ziplock plastic bag, that has one label with the name of the material and the location in which it was found.

Specific Description: Coloration of this quartzite varies from cloudy white, light yellow, light gray, pink and red. 

Generally speaking, quartzite is a very hard metamorphic rock, which in most cases was originally sandstone.  Through the metamorphic process of heating and pressure, the original quartz sand grains cement and are fused into one overall mass of quartzite.  Two defining characteristic of quartzite are that on freshly broken surfaces, it has a "sugary" appearance, and that fractures occur across the quartz crystals, not around their individual outer edges.
