TRANCAS GEODES

What you will receive with this purchase: 10 Trancas geodes that are all 1.5" - 2" in size.

These geodes are from the Trancas Mine in Chihuahua Mexico.

Trancas geodes have a unique and fascinating appearance!  Some will look like miniature underground caverns with stalactites and stalagmites, while some will have sparkling winter wonderland scenes as if a fresh snowful just occured!

The mineral crystals that produce the above described Trancas geode scenes are primarily clear quartz and milky quartz, with secondary crystals possible such as calcite and fluorite.  Each geode is unique, so the minerals, crystal types and patterns will vary with each geode.

Although somewhat rare, some of these geodes will fluoresce under a short wave ultraviolet light.

These geodes are also known as the Chihuahua Geode.

How To "Crack" A Geode To Minimize Breakage

It is advisable to break geodes under adult supervision. 

Due to possible fragmentation when breaking, wearing eye protection is advisable.

• You Provide: Hammer and an old sock or towel.  A small chisel is optional.
• To minimize fragmentation when breaking, place geode in a sock or under a towel. 
• Place the geode on a hard surface, such as a concrete driveway or large solid rock. 
• Warning Before Hammering: Do NOT swing hammer with much force at first. Your goal should be to NOT BREAK the geode with your first strikes.  Instead, you are determining the breaking point by gradually increasing hammer-strike pressure. 
• Begin light hammering directly down onto the center of the geode (equator).  Avoid non-centered glancing blows.  Gradually rotate geode as you increase hammer pressure. Continue until geode is opened to reveal its wonderous treasures inside!
• "Scoring Technique": The above steps may be followed with the addition of a small chisel to "score" (dashed line made by chisel) the outside of the geode.  It is POSSIBLE to lessen fragmentation by using the "scoring" technique.
